LATHE RACK:
Drying racks can be make from wood and lathe.
Instead of drying ware on a board or table, this rack provides 360 degree ventilation.

LEAD GLAZE:
A clear glaze with lead as one of the components.
Lead easily leaches [ moves] from the glaze into liquids, especially hot liquids.
Lead glaze is poisonous, therefore, not a good choise for cups or anything that
is intended to contain food. During the middle ages and before, lead was used to
join ceramic pipes for fresh water supplies to villages. History of the middle ages
reports crossroad signs warning travelers that residents of the next city were all
crazy with lead poisoning and to enter at their own risk. WOW !

LEAD SOLUABILITY:
This is a big deal. Lead is soluable in water. For hundreads of years potters
made a living applying lead glazes to dinnerware and food containers. This was, of course,
out of inocense. However, people were adveresely affected. Once the consequences of lead
in glazes and paints was confirmend tests immerged to establish safe levels of lead content.

LEATHERHARD:
Same as “cheesehard” as
recorded earlier. Leatherhard is a stage of the drying process.
The clay still contains some water. It can be carved or slightly altered
or added to. However, it will severely crack or break if stressed too far.
The cracks look like aged, old leather. This is the stage when pieces
are adhere to the main body of the piece: i.e. handles, spouts, knobs.

LEVEL:
A carpenter's hand level is a great studio tool.
It is especially helpful when assembling multi-piece vessels. It is not a
difficult proceedure, Check out the tutorial below.

LOOP TOOLS:
Loop tools must have been around
ceramic studios since the iron age. They are great for both the wheel
and handbuilding. As simple as they are,
there really is not much variety in their size. Check out a way
to “extend” their usefulness.

lUSTER or LUSTRE:
A specially formulated metalic glaze.
[ tin, copper, silver, gold ]
During the glaze firing, the metal component migrates to the surface.
It creates a reflective surface that has metalic qualities.
i.e. highly reflective or mother of pearl type surface. It is best
created in a reduction kiln atmosphere. There are commercially
formulated gold, silver and metalic luster glazes that can be fired
in an electric kiln's oxidation atmosphere.
