Portrait of Anxiety/Depression; Tlatilco, Mexico- circa 1300-700 B.C.

What a find! I found these Classic Pre-Columbian sculptures at a yard sale. They were a promotion for a pharmicutical company. They are actually ceramic. OOPZ ! I broke it. Scrool down to see a close-up of the center of the clay.

The method clay is fired determines the way it looks. There are basicly two firing proceedures. Oxidation[ which maintains oxygen in the kiln chamber.]and Reduction[ which chokes off or reduces the oxygen; causing the clay to turn black from carbon.] This hand molded piece was reduced. Notice the black center. Cool !
