Calipers are indespensiable for producing lids and multi piece production. My firsrt [ the smallest on the right ] was a high school acqusition in October, 1965.
This is an image of my set. The big yellow one, came from an end of the school year trash heap. It was intended for drawing circles with chalk on the black board. Antique ! Chalk dust promotes pulmanary silicosis; lung disease. Modern schools use dry markers on white sheet metal.
CALIPERS; below are two views of a homemade caliper.

This is a piece of scrap metal from a thrift store. The red tag is still on it, on the left. The image on the right is an exploded view of the assembly. There is even a 1/4 inch [ 1.5 cm ] drill bit from a tool close out bin at an outlet mall.

This is an example of a typical sequence of steps when using a caliper to coordinate the diameter of a vase's neck and a top for the vase.
