SLURRY IS NOT SLIP !!!
Really; slip is thinned, liquid clay used for molding
or “trailed” for decoration.
SLURRY...
is a thick, gooey, lumpy, mixture of clay scraps plus
distilled white vinegar.
NOT WATER
We use it for a lubricant for throwing pots on the wheel.
NOT WATER
We also use it for an adhesive when attaching multiple pieces.
NOT WATER !!!
Mix slurry in a small,
salad size, bowl. Start with one part water, plus three or four parts
distilled vinegar and a coil of the of the clay body your using.
Squeeze, chop, stir, bump, the clay into a thick, lump free
consistancy of heavy cream. Add more clay and vinegar as needed. It may
form to a geletinous state, that is okay. This state is called
“thixotropy.” The vinegar is acidic
and clearly enhances the joining process. As a lubricant for
clay on the wheel, this slurry mixture is much better than water.
It does not absort in the clay wall as fast as water. Therefore,
extending throwing time. Store the bowl of slurry in a plastic bag for
further use.
